ECOS

UK National Civic Trust Sustainability Award 2001 for The most outstanding project to demonstrate the principles of sustainable design and construction

Ecos has been developed collaboratively by a team of committed people with a clear vision of how sustainable development can be achieved and communicated to the public in a way that is tangible, understandable and exciting. It aims to symbolise the growing importance of sustainability and make connections between global issues and our own lives and experience. The project was originally conceived in 1973 as a town park for Ballymena, but the scheme was reviewed in 1995, and the concept emerged of a visitor centre where the building, displays and surrounding landscape would be integrated to communicate a central theme of environmental sustainability.

The centre includes:
-Visitor Centre and Cafe, Parkland, Environmental Information Library, Lettable Offices, Camping and Caravan Park and Organic Market Garden within 67 hectares.
