NEWRY FLOOD ALLEVIATION SCHEME (FAS)

Part of the city of Newry lies in the floodplain of the tidal Newry/Clanrye River. The area was historically protected from flooding by a masonry river wall which was well over 100 years old.

On behalf of Rivers Agency we carried out a feasibility study which considered the hydrology of the catchment, the relationship between tidal and river flow conditions, the risk of failure of the old wall, and the benefit/cost of the works. The report recommended that the old wall should be replaced with a new floodwall over a length of 1.5km, and earth floodbanks over a length of 2km.

The construction work was carried out under five separate Contracts in order to minimise disruption in the city centre, and the main works included:

reinforced concrete retaining wall along the edge of the river, with the exposed faces clad with local Newry granite to retain the character of the area.

Raising of upstream and downstream floodbanks.

new trunk sewer behind the floodwall as part of Water Service's overall improvement of the sewerage system, which collects overflows and other outfalls to the river and conveys the flow to a new pumping station.
