The Sixmilewater caused severe flooding during the 16th and 17th August 2008, during which a significant number of residential and commercial properties were inundated. The areas affected were Ballyclare, Dunadry, Muckamore and Antrim, specifically the residential areas of Meadowside, Riverside and Massereene Street. The Antrim gauge recorded a peak flow of 208.7m3/s. WDR & RT Taggart and JBA Consulting were commissioned by the Rivers Agency to complete a modeling study of the Sixmilewater between Ballynure and Lough Neagh in County Antrim. The aim of which was to construct, calibrate and sensitivity test a 1-dimensional hydrodynamic InfoWorks-RS model of the Sixmilewater to enable accurate estimates of the 10 year, 100 year, 1000 year and 100 year plus Climate Change (2030) flood levels.
