Pound and High Street Bridge were built in the early 1960s as part of the Comber By-Pass scheme. Both bridges were showing significant signs of deterioration, with water leaks and rust staining at the halving joints and spalled concrete and rusting rebar along the deck slab soffit, column crosshead beam and the bankseats.
We were appointed by DRD Roads Service to investigate and assess the bridges, and subsequently to develop and supervise a repair contract.
Site investigatory works involved opening up works, concrete dust sampling, cover meter survey and half-cell potential survey. Based on the information obtained, and the available record information, a full structural assessment was carried out and a report with recommendations prepared.
Repair work has been carried out to Pound Bridge consisting of:
Concrete patch repair and rebar cleaning / replacement
Chloride extraction
Increased cover to rebar by epoxy mortar
Concrete protection using barrier coating
Removal / replacement of bridge deck surfacing and waterproofing
Restoration of existing steel bridge parapets
