ENNISKILLEN WASTEWATER TREATMENT WORKS

Green Apple Award 2009

Green Apple Award 2009 for Environmental Best Practice - in recognition of excellence in the design of its rain-water harvesting systems.

The new Enniskillen WwTW provides waste-water treatment for the town of Enniskillen, including the new Hospital, and meets the discharge consent standards set out in the Water Order Consent regulated by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, ensuring protection of a balanced ecosystem within Lough Erne.

The main drivers for the scheme, part of DRD Water Service's capital investment programme, were legislative requirements, increased discharge standards and future flows.

The proposed scheme provides treatment for a future PE of 35,830 (12.5 Ml/day) to a standard of 20:30 (BOD:SS), along with Total Nitrate removal and it acts as a regional sludge centre.

Site restrictions included Planning constraints, poor ground, a high water table, strict limits on odour, noise and vibration and a requirement to maintain the existing process during construction.

WDR & RT Taggart was appointed by DRD Water Service to act as Project Manager and our key functions included:
