Riverside Place is a complex yet sensitive urban regeneration and mixed use development situated on the banks of the River Kent; in a Conservation Area and Area of Townscape Character. The scheme comprises a new shopping centre, pedestrian riverside walkway, internal landscaped courtyards, offices and a new tourist heritage centre. The public realm streetscape promotes pedestrian linkages from the existing urban centre affording pedestrian access to the River Kent with careful consideration paid to users needs. The area as a whole was considered; the layout of boundaries, roads, vistas and viewpoints, trees and green features, street furniture and surfaces, and the characteristics of the existing townscape were all taken into account in the creation of a high quality furnished streetscape. The hard landscaping elements, the variety of floor surfaces, patterns and textures used create a hierarchy of pedestrian and vehicular movement through the sequences of spaces, character areas and resting points. The pedestrian linkages around and through the streetscape provides safe and easy access, visual reference is achieved through change in materials. The material selection as stated reflect those found in the locality; textures and colours are sympathetic to the Conservation area and are an integral part of the design. The high quality design creates a sense of identity and civic pride and will help stimulate a wider regeneration of the area; ensuring a lasting positive legacy for generations to come.
