M&S GRAFTON STREET, DUBLIN

The Marks and Spencer at its prestigious location in Grafton Street Dublin has recently undergone a thorough internal remodelling which involved significant structural alterations, and also involved an upwards extension in order to create a new roof-mounted restaurant. The total cost of the works carried out within this constrained environment, amounted to £11m

Elements of the existing steel structure had to be carefully checked by structural calculation for new loadings associated with removal of escalators in some areas, the infilling of floors, and the formation of new openings to facilitate new escalator banks in other areas.

At roof level, significant structural design was involved with the proposed transfer of heavy rooftop building services plant to relocated positions, the relocation and extension of escalators to roof level, and the construction of a steel-framed rooftop restaurant which offers good views above the city roof line and down into Grafton Street itself.

All work was carried out while keeping the store open through its normal trading hours, and the coordination of design and construction detail resulted in a very attractive new retail facility, appropriate to the listed status of the building and to the M&S Brand itself.
