The site for the new Tesco Store in Enniskillen formerly comprised both a petrol filling station and a football pitch. It overlies very soft ground conditions, with a high water table - typical of what is encountered in some areas around Enniskillen.
The whole steel-framed building (approx. 58,000 sq.ft), together with the car park and service yard, was constructed on piled foundations. The design also included for protection from any methane gas which might be produced from the underlying decaying organic matter within the peat layers. The use of stonework on the elevation facing the main Belfast/Dublin road, greatly enhances the facility.
The store attracted a lot of local attention during construction and at its opening, and is a welcome addition to the excellent shopping facilities in the Enniskillen area.
