A leak down test is a method of using compressed air and a specialized gauge set that reads differential pressure to evaluate the condition of an engine’s cylinders, pistons and rings, and valves and seats without disassembling the engine. If all those engine goodies don’t result in cylinder pressure, performance is sure to disappoint, and there’s more to the story than you think The cylinder leak down test allows diyers and professionals to assess the integrity of an engine’s internal components

This test, indispensable for measuring the capability of an engine to hold pressure, is an integral part of any thorough engine health assessment due to its ability to pinpoint issues that rob you of power and reliability.
A cylinder leak down test helps me assess internal engine health, isolate failing cylinders, and determine whether an engine needs a simple fix or a full rebuild.
Cylinder pressure leak down tester in a cylinder leak down test the engine is placed on top dead centre (tdc), of the cylinder in question Then, using a similar type of connector as the compression test, we fill the cylinder with pressure The tester then measures the volume of air needed to maintain, a predetermined pressure in the cylinder. The beauty of the leak down test is, you can test only low cylinders, or you can test all the cylinders to determine overall engine condition.
Disconnect the gauge and move to the next cylinder
