This was apparently paul's preference since he is called paul in all other bible books where he is mentioned, including those that he authored According to acts in the new testament, he was a jewish roman citizen who converted to christianity after the resurrected jesus appeared to him. Adopting his roman name was typical of paul's missionary style.
