A furry is a fan of anthropomorphic animal characters (animals with human characteristics, think the casts of zootopia or kung fu panda) that is a member of the furry fandom.
If someone says i'm a furry, it usually means that they've created or chosen a furry concept to identify with, called a fursona
They might dress up or roleplay as this furry. A furry is someone who decides they want to identify themselves as a furry That's all, you don't need a 'sona or be active in any of the various communities Your interest can be humans with animal characteristics or animals with human characteristics or cartoon characters or nature documentaries or costumes or vr avatars or whatever else makes you go ok, i'm down with being part of this.

I'm just confused with this recent trend in furry meaning solely cartoonish style anthropomorphic animals, and it's become a pet peeve of mine, especially since a more realistic looking style is one of my favorite subgenres of the fandom
